Parwhistle: the daily word ladder you can actually beat
Climb from the top word to the goal word, one rung at a time. Each rung changes exactly one letter and must be a real word. Do it in as few strokes as you can. Here’s the twist: par is set using everyday words, so if you know a sneaky rarer word, you can finish under par for a birdie or an eagle.
How to play
- Tap a letter in your current word. It lights up.
- Tap a new letter on the keyboard. If it makes a real word, it becomes your next rung.
- Reach the goal word at the bottom. Letters that already match the goal glow purple.
Example: COLD → WARM
COLD → CORD → CARD → WARD → WARM 4 strokes
On a keyboard, use the arrow keys to pick a letter, type to change it, and press Backspace to undo.
Golf scoring
Every rung is one stroke, and each hint adds one extra stroke. Par is the shortest route using everyday words, so a sharp vocabulary can beat it.
| Score | Name |
|---|---|
| 2 under par | 🦅 Eagle |
| 1 under par | 🐦 Birdie |
| Equal to par | ⛳ Par |
| 1 over par | Bogey |
| 2 over par | Double bogey |
Daily and Unlimited
Daily gives everyone the same two holes each day (Easy, par 3–4, and Medium, par 5–6), with a new pair at midnight Mexico City time. Finish them to build your streak. Unlimited deals a fresh random ladder whenever you want, so you can keep playing.
FAQ
What is a word ladder?
It is a classic puzzle that Lewis Carroll published in 1879 under the name “Doublets.” You turn one word into another by changing one letter at a time, and every step must be a real word.
When does the daily puzzle change?
At midnight Mexico City time (UTC-6). Everyone in the world gets the same ladders on the same day.
How can I score under par?
Par only uses everyday words. Our word list also accepts rarer valid words, so if you know one that makes a shortcut, you can finish under par.
Why was my word rejected?
Parwhistle uses a public-domain word-game list (ENABLE) with offensive words removed. Proper names, abbreviations and slang may not be on it.
Do hints cost anything?
A hint plays the next rung of a shortest route for you, and adds one extra stroke to your score.
Where are my stats stored?
Only in your browser (localStorage). There are no accounts and no cookies. Clearing your browser data resets your streak.
Does it work offline?
Yes. After your first visit the game is saved on your device, so you can keep playing without a connection.
Is Parwhistle free?
Yes, it is free to play with no sign-up.
